Finding this dance changed my life.
It brought me closer to the cultures which I felt so connected to,
it improved my physical and emotional well being,
and helped me develop confidence and creativity to live my life the way I was meant to.
JANE
MY DANCE
A word people always use is bellydance. But this is a term, coined by the west, which does no justice to the cultural backgrounds and variety of dances that are found in the Middle East and North Africa.
My dance has grown from Baladi (which means in Arabic 'of my country'), the dance of the Egyptian people as opposed to the over-sexualised bellydance of the Cairo scene, or the western bellydance styles which often focus on costuming and mimic eastern dance with the western focus on pushing the body.
Baladi dance has now also developed into a dance which is perfomed, but I always aim to be sensitive to the values of the true Baladi culture which has given me so much joy. In Mazazik Dance, respect to the origins of the dances we are exploring is paramount.
Saidi (Egyptian folk), Baladi, into Raqs Sharqi (translated meaning 'dance of the East'), the complexity of Classical Arabic dance, and modern interpretations of bellydance, are all styles I explore in my work.
And my style of Modern Bellydance (Arabic dance which has been influenced by different cultures and dance styles, and works the body in a more physically demanding way), is influenced by my love of travel and exploring different cultures, both urban and rural, and also my belief that our connection to the natural world is a vital source of creative inspiration and physical and mental balance and wellbeing, even spiritual connection.

BACK TO BASICS & MAZAZIK CULTURE CLUB
Hull
27 April (11.30 til 13.30) & 28 April (11.30 to 13.30)
Hull Dance, Alfred Gelder Street
To celebrate the launch of my new termly workshops in this fascinating city, and to add an annual event for beginners and dancers new to Mazazik who might be a bit nervous of joining an established group, come and learn some moves, meet some lovely folk and enjoy exploring a new place.
In our theme THIS IS THE SEA, you will discover moods and dynamics of modern bellydance, and we will work on the technique of bodywaves and armwork.
After our Saturday morning dance (11.30 to 1.30) you are very welcome to join the Saturday matinee Mazazik Culture Club outing to see Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands at Hull New Theatre, or just do your own thing.
In the evening we will try one of the restaurants at Hull Marina and have a drink in one of Hull's traditional pubs in the old town.
After our Sunday morning dance session (11.30 to 1.30) head off home or visit one of Hull's amazing museums.
Dance Workshops £30, payable before 1 April.
And some information for complete beginners - we dance barefoot where possible, and you don't need anything special to wear. Something loose and comfortable like leggings/trousers and a T~shirt are fine, plus a long scarf or sarong to tie round your hips.
